Homecoming

Saturday night - hot rollers cooling off, discarded shoes and purses, mint wrappers...How in the world is my little girl old enough to be a high school freshman, going to her first homecoming dance? And let me tell you, things sure have changed in 25 years. Going to an all girl school and dating boys from an all boy school meant we had dates to high school dances (and double the amount of dances to go to). Now, the school has gone co-ed - so they go in groups, which is just fine by me. They were so cute, all dressed up - 4 boys, 3 girls, eating at one of the boys houses, in the fancy dining room. Lots of laughter...my first dance, I don't think anyone spoke a word at dinner. Then I totally did the mom thing and took pictures and off to the dance. Dropped the kids off - and in they went.

Here is what I found out in the dance post mortem: Every 5th kids was given a breathalyzer, bags were handed out to put anything then they didn't want to carry around i.e. phones, purses, shoes and they were checked, only fast songs were played, and they sold pop, water, etc...This is so vastly different then the spiked punch bowls, the shoes thrown in the corner, stumbling around looking for your date dances we went to. THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!

Oddities of Me

There are some things that just plain creep me out. The phrase “I don’t know why, but that is creepy to me” has come out of my mouth more times in the last few weeks. I know I am not alone in this – and if you think real hard, I bet you can make your own list - and not the too easy ones either i.e. clowns, mimes - cause everyone is freaked out by people who hide under make –up.

Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland: for some unknown reason as a kid and as an adult these two stories disturb me. A man being attached to a wooden puppet – and when he dances – ewwww! Alice in Wonderland – that one I am unsure of what bothers me here – maybe it was the whole “you’re cool if you can reference AIWL in conversations” – and then everyone does that nasal laugh and head nod thing.

Fruit Bouquets: Sure, they look novel – flower arrangements that look like flowers. But come on people – send a fruit basket, send flowers, or even send both.

Wood utensils, wood bowls, wood serving platters, wood cutting boards: This goes way back to my earliest memories. Growing up, we had the standard set of wood salad bowl - but too many kids in the family to all get one. I always grabbed the little glass ones. Don’t even get me started on those malt cups you get at ball parks with the wooden spatula/spoon thingy– makes me gag even thinking about it. Hmm, maybe that is also why Pinocchio bugs me so much.

Ground meats: My family used to kid me and say I was a vegetarian, except for steak. I eat meat, but only certain kinds – preferable without any bones, not mixed, not ground, and not stuffed. Give me a well done beef roast or a boneless pork chop and I am a happy girl. Even better with lots of garlic and any potato!

The word “Juicy “or “Moist”: Why or why do weather forecasters like to say those words? No need to tell me it is “juicy outside today”. Or worse yet, “it’s going to be a moist one today”. Come on people; think about what you are saying. And please, never ever describe a stuffed, bone in, chicken breast as moist or juicy.

Ringing in a New Decade

2010 started a few days ago. New Year's Eve started with me going into work, per usual. I left around noon and met my daughter, mom, and sister for lunch at a local pub. Then I dropped my daughter off at my brothers...after a healthy glass of homemade Bailey's, went home. I was going over to to my friend's house for the night. Almost bailed, as it was about 20 below zero and icy as hell out. Made myself go. A group of us went to dinner at the a family owned Italian restaurant. Free wine - evening has started out well. Proceeded back to my friend's house. He lives about two blocks form the restaurant, but as stated before, it was freezing, so we drove. Anyhow, didn't really have plans - for some reason I thought we should play quarters.

Now, it has been almost 20 years since I bounced a quarter off a table, into a glass, and made someone drink. We had a blast. 3 of us in the group have been friends since high school and fell right back into our immature ways. Listen to 80s music...took some dance breaks...made up silly rules ("SueButt is the best")...

I think it is time to revert and spend this new decade as if I had my whole life ahead of me...maybe just a tad wiser this time though!
